At 12.54 Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service contacted the team with a report of “persons trapped” in a car hanging over a 200’ drop on Scout Road. The team was mobilised with a full call out and as team members responded, the first fire appliance arrived on scene. Upon arrival at the incident it was clear that the car was not hanging over a 200’ drop and that the occupants of the vehicle could easily be safely removed (the team was therefore stood down responding).

This incident highlights the need for people reporting incidents to be very clear about what they have witnessed. Running to this incident were our 4 landrovers, 1 GMAS Ambulance, Police, 1 Fire pump from Bolton Central, 1 Pump from Bolton North, 1 Aerial Platform, 1 Pinzgauer (a 6 wheel drive all terrain fire appliance) and 1 Emergency Salvage Tender from Farnworth.

With darkness rapidly falling, and whilst packing up kit from Incident 90 ( and kit we still had to pack up from Incident 89 ! ) we received a call from GMAS at 16.23 hrs to go to Winter Hill summit, where there was a report of a person with diabetic problems at the summit. Four team vehicles responded, along with three other team members in their personal 4WD vehicles.
The summit road to Winter Hill TV Station, was impassable to all but 4WD vehicles, with very icy and snowy conditions throughout its entire length.
In darkness, the first vehicles to the summit area, met up with the person involved, who whilst out hillwalking with her husband, and a friend, had become ill, and asked a passing hillwalker to contact 999, and then made their way to the summit TV station. ( not permanently staffed incidentally ) The woman was suffering from her diabetic condition, and the onset of hypothermia. She was brought down from the summit in a team members vehicle, to meet the LAS vehicle at the nearest point they could access, some mile and a half from the summit, on Georges Lane. The 38 years old woman was transferred to the LAS vehicle, and taken to Royal Bolton Hospital.

Team vehicles on the summit of Winter Hill, which by now was cold and uninviting.

This time 22 Bolton MRT members were involved, along with the LAS Ambulance and crew from Chorley Ambulance Station, and two Lancashire Constabulary Officers in their 4WD vehicle. Responding GMAS vehicles from both Blackrod and Standish Ambulance stations were stood down early in the incident.
Tired team members then returned to our Ladybridge base, where the four team vehicles involved were washed down, equipment replenished and our Team Leader set to writing up the reports on these three incidents, ably assisted by Deputy Leader Paul Jorgensen.

Whilst personnel were returning equipment to the team vehicles, parked up on an hillside track, at the conclusion of the previous incident, the team became aware of another incident immediately nearby at 15.28 hrs. A 72 year old man out with his wife, had apparently collapsed, and was suffering from concussion and possibly the effects of a stroke. He was treated on scene with Oxygen and then stretcher evacuated to the LAS Ambulance called to the previous incident, which was parked at Lower House Car Park, Rivington. During this evacuation the mans wife then fell ill, and was able with assistance, to walk to one of our vehicles, which then brought her down an icy moorland track to the LAS Ambulance and her husband. Both were taken together to Royal Bolton Hospital in the LAS Ambulance.

Again 21 Bolton MRT members were involved in this incident, along with the LAS crew from Chorley Ambulance station.
As a footnote, a team member who actually lived near to the couple involved, offered to drive their car, on their behalf back to their home, from where they had left it in a moorland car park.

GMAS initially contacted the team at 13.51, with regards to the report of an incident in Rivington, the exact location of which was unknown. Team members already in the general area quickly responded, as the call was then passed to LAS. The team met up with the 999 caller, and it was quickly established that a sledging accident had occurred, involving a 33 year old man, in the fields below the Terraced Gardens at Rivington. Team members were on scene very quickly, and escorted an LAS Ambulance crew to the scene. Suffering suspected lower back and abdominal injuries, the man was stabilised on scene, and the NWAA Helimed 08 was requested for a helicopter evacuation.

The team was called out by GMP to continue the search effort for a missing 20 year old Wythenshawe woman. Earlier in the week on Thursday, our Search Dog team of Dave Marsh and Chi, had been involved in this same search.
Under the guidance of two GMP Missing Person Search Managers, the 20 team members present were tasked with searching a dense area of woodland close to the missing person’s home address, and areas surrounding where she worked.
Nothing was found which could give any clue to this young women’s whereabouts, despite our finding a pair of boots, one wallet and a diary, none of which could be connected to the missing person.
By mid afternoon, the search taskings, which had commenced early morning were completed, and Police enquiries will continue.

Our thanks are expressed to the owner of the Heald Green Public House, who allowed us to take over a sizeable part of the car park, to set up a search control, and who also kept us generously supplied with tea and coffee, at no cost.

Bolton MRT planespotters club, perhaps we should tell them to turn round !!!

One interesting aspect of where we set up our Search Control, was that we were directly under the very final flightpath of aircraft landing at Manchester International Airport, perhaps we should now invest in a strobe beacon for the top of our Control Trailer Aerial mast !

See below for details of an interesting visitor to our search.
