At 20:46 on Saturday 2nd September the team was contacted by North West Ambulance Service (Greater Manchester) EOC, who were requesting our assistance at an incident in Boothstown, Manchester.

A 16 year old male was reported to have suffered serious abdominal injuries in fields near to Boothstown Marina.

An NWAS RRV paramedic, Emergency ambulance and the NWAS HART team were mobilised, in addition to ourselves and GMP officers. Additional support was provided by an aircraft from the National Police Air Service, for scene lighting and search.

Our first attending team members arrived on scene at 21:12. After initial treatment by the NWAS crews, the casualty was carried on a BMRT stretcher for approximately 500m, to the road, for onward transport to hospital.

BMRT remained on scene to provide scene lighting to support the work of officers from GMP.

Our thanks are expressed to several youths on scene who helped to guide personnel to the incident site.

In total, 22 Bolton MRT members assisted on this incident in three team vehicles.

The North West Ambulance Service had requested for the assistance of RPMRT with a casualty who had collapsed in woodland. Because of where the incident site was, ambulance staff would not be able to carry a casualty the distance to the nearest road head. Due to the time of the day, RPMRT requested the assistance of Bolton MRT.

On arriving on scene, the team were stood down as the ambulance crew had managed to escort the man to the waiting ambulance.

As more team members responded to the incident, two SAR Alpine Lite stretchers were deployed to the site. Ropes were deployed to the site to assist with access to the site. The two girls were placed into casualty bags to protect from the dropping temperatures before being transferred onto the stretchers.

A short carry up the slope transferred the girls to the awaiting NWAS ambulance.

NWAS HART were also on-scene assisting with this incident.

We would like to wish the two girls a speedy recovery.

At 12:42 today the team was called by the North West Ambulance Service to assist with a casualty at the 13th hole of the Bolton Old Links golf course. The 70 year old male had fallen and damaged his leg and was unable to weight bear. Due to the distance from the nearest road access the team were called to assist the on-scene paramedics with the carry-off to the waiting ambulance.

The first team member on scene was Paul Copley who guided further members to the casualty, as further personnel arrived the decision was made to request the assistance of North West Air Ambulance to transfer the casualty to hospital. The air ambulance arrived but the due to the worsening weather the decision was taken to carry the casualty to the ambulance.

The NWAS ambulance and Mountain Rescue Land Rovers were located near the Bobs Smithy Pub on Walker Fold Road, due to the location of the casualty the vehicles relocated to Barrow Bridge, which involved a shorter carry to the ambulance.

In total 16 team members were involved in this incident.

The team would like to thank the golfers on the course today for assisting by directing the responding team members to the incident site, and for not playing the 13th hole whilst we were dealing with the casualty.

On the return journey to our Ladybridge Hall base, at 16:29 the team received the third callout of the day to assist NWAS crews with an incident involving a female who had fallen off a rope swing near Tower Farm, Greenmont.

With this location being near to the border with Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue Team area, we contacted them to assist in the potential long carry-off.

A paramedic and ambulance crew were on scene tending to the girls injuries, watched over by the girls mother and friends, who were both taking photos of the incident so the girl could look back on them once she was well enough.

Bolton and Rossendale team members put the girl into one of our full-body vacuum mattresses and carefully transported the girl from the incident location back to the waiting ambulances.

The incident was complete at 17:45 with the casualty transferred to the ambulance.

All three incidents today represent the close relationship Bolton Mountain Rescue Team have with neighbouring teams and the North West Ambulance Service.

The team was contacted by NWAS control to assist with the evacuation of a female with a lower leg injury from the grounds of Haigh Hall who had been dog walking when she fell.

The Saturday evening had been a meal to celebrate former team leader Garry Rhodes’ 27 years as team leader and so many of the team were unavailable due to the evenings festivities. Therefore assistance was requested from one of our neighbouring teams, Bowland Pennine MRT who kindly provided extra resources. Many of their team members live just on the border between the team areas and so were in an excellent position to help.

Between the 2 teams the lady was splinted and evacuated approx. 400m to the ambulance where she was taken to the royal albert Edward infirmary in Wigan for treatment.

A huge thanks to both Bowland Pennine and Rossendale & Pendle MRT’s who both agreed to give up their Saturday evening to provide mutual cover for us to allow team members to attend and celebrate Garry’s time as team leader.

We were called out this afternoon by colleagues at North West Ambulance Service to an incident on the Leeds to Liverpool canal in Wigan.

A male had suffered a serious lower leg injury following a slip on a boat, and the ambulance crews on scene requested our assistance to convey the male from the scene to their ambulance some distance away.

The team worked with ambulance service staff and staff from the Canal and River Trust to move the man from the canal side to the ambulance a few hundred metres away. He was then taken by ambulance to the Royal Albert Edward infirmary in Wigan.

Further information including a report from the casualty himself can be found on our Facebook site.
