Organised by team member Ann Shaw, nine team members along with some ex members and friends of the team journeyed to the Cairngorms over the last week of February, for the teams’ annual winter mountaineering week.
Heavy snow showers, blizzards, high winds and the obligatory Cairngorm whiteout characterised the week. Nonetheless less experienced members were taught the skills of ice axe breaking and use of axe and crampons on steep ground. The all week high avalanche risk put paid to our winter climbing aspirations, but a party still managed a good day on the Fiacaille ridge (good; meaning gale force winds, loose snow, occasional blizzards and a deep powder snow walk in.)
One intrepid couple of stalwarts snow holed for the evening near to the Cairngorm car park whilst another group visited Creag Meaghaidh.
The downhill skiers on the trip fared a little better getting in 3½ days skiing at Lecht and Cairngorm, despite the often atrocious wintry conditions (Ciste Gully offering excellent sport)
