Jolly Crofters Fundraising Team

12th February 2006

Today 37 team members and 2 Support Group members provided standby rescue cover (as we do annually) for this year’s Winter Hill Fell Race, the 24th year that it has been run, with the team in attendance every year.

The fell race covers an 11 mile course visiting 9 checkpoints, centred upon Winter Hill and the team provides checkpoint crews, spot pickup crews, control & event liaison staff.

This year the race took place in very cold conditions combined with torrential rain and poor, misty visibility, attracting 187 entrants.

The extremely poor weather and ground conditions no doubt contributed to the record number of 21 retirements on the course, of which 7 were transported back to the race finish in team vehicles (some suffering from hypothermia and sprain injuries).

Given the poor conditions, the team members present welcomed our Support Group members, Gillian and Carolyn, who set up our catering trailer and provided our usual catering from 9am in the morning through to the event finishing at 2pm.
