In between the Junior and Senior Fell Races today constituting the Rivington Pike Fell Race, at 13.10hrs today our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE, was contacted directly by the NWAS (Lancashire) Emergency Control Centre ‘ Air Desk,’ requesting the teams assistance with the report of a collapsed woman in the Rivington area.
The exact incident location was unknown at the time to NWAS ECC and whilst The NWAA Helimed 72 had been despatched, our Team Leader attempted (Unsuccessfully as it turned out) to contact the mobile phone of the informant, to find out where the incident scene was.
Almost at the same time a member of the collapsed woman’s party had run down from the Rivington Pike location of the incident to nearby team vehicles covering the Fell Race to directly request assistance.
A call was also received by the Great House Barn Information Centre in Lever Park, Rivington, regarding this incident.
NWAA Helimed 72 lands next to one of our vehicles, below Rivington Pike
With all details becoming clearer, our crews from our BM2 and BM3 vehicles made an immediate response, relocating the short distance to be nearer the actual incident location at the foot of Rivington Pike by 13.13hrs.
Just as our first team members actual arrived at the incident location at 13.23hrs, the NWAA Helimed 72 landed nearby, and its crew and our members jointly assisted the woman.
The 65 years old woman from Warrington had enjoyed a walk up to the summit of the moorland landmark of Rivington Pike in the company of twelve family members, including her husband, three sons, daughter in law and grand children.
On the descent she unfortunately slipped, falling and injuring her head, and her family quite rightly dialled 999 requesting emergency assistance.
Team members and the Helimed crew placed the injured woman on a specialist mountain rescue stretcher and she was carried the short distance down from the slopes of Rivington Pike to the waiting Air Ambulance helicopter which had landed on the nearby moorland track of Georges Lane, near to Rivington Terraced Gardens.
By 13.57hrs the NWAA Helimed 72 had lifted off for the short direct flight to Royal Blackburn Hospital, with another family member accompanying the woman in the helicopter.
The remaining family members including the grand children were then transported down to their vehicles in Lever Park, Rivington, in our Team Leaders car, and our BM2 and BM3 vehicles, with this incident concluding at 14.35hrs.
In total eighteen team call out list members were involved in this response, some directly and some held in reserve, with two team vehicles from the four present also directly involved.
The North West Air Ambulance, ‘Helimed 72’ came from its base at City Airport Manchester (Barton), with three crew involved.
United Utilities Ranger Andy Ryding (A former Bolton MRT member and an ex Team Training Officer) was also involved on scene.
Our thanks are also expressed to the NWAS (Lancashire) ECC Air Desk Despatcher.
Another excellent example of our close co-operative working with the NWAA greatly helped by the NWAS ECC staff.
During the conclusion of Incident 27/2012, the crew of our BM3 vehicle at 14.45 were approached by a small family party with their niece aged 10 years old, requesting assistance as the young girl had fallen on the Rivington Pike track sustaining a painfull and very swollen knee injury.
She was assessed, and then transported in our BM3 vehicle, with a family member back to the families car at the Great House Barn Information Centre in Lever Park, Rivington.
Other family members were escorted walking back to their car by team members.
This incident concluded at 15.25hrs, with the family taking the young girl themselves to hospital.
In total out of the seventeen team members present, five were directly involved in this incident.

Whilst in the Rivington Pike area for the Good Friday Pike Fair Celebrations, the crews of our BM2 and BM3 vehicles were approached by members of the public at 14.20hrs with reports of an injured youth on the slopes of Rivington Pike.
An immediate response was made, with the youth, a 14 years old male teenager from nearby Horwich, being quickly located and diagnosed with a possible hand fracture.
He was treated on scene, and then transported in our BM2 vehicle to meet up with a responding NWAS (Manchester) Emergency Ambulance at the junction of Georges Lane and Chorley Old Road.
Meeting up with the NWAS Ambulance and his father at this point, the father stated he would take his son himself to hospital, and the team and NWAS Ambulance were stood down at 15.05hrs.
(The crews of our BM1 and BM4 vehicles were held on nearby standby if their assistance was also required on this incident, as it was they were not needed)
From the seventeen team members overall present, eight were directly involved in this incident.

At 08:36 on this very nice morning the team was paged by NWAS (Manchester) Emergency Control Centre who were requesting our assistance at an incident in Harwood, Bolton.
Senior team member Mike Marsh contacted NWAS Manchester to get the details of the incident, which ultimately were that a male golfer had fallen whilst out golfing on Harwood Golf Course, and had suffered a suspected broken leg and arm.
The NWAS (Manchester) Emergency Ambulance crew were already on scene, but with the injured male a considerable distance from the club house, the team was required to carry him to the waiting ambulance at “The Height”, a nearby horse stables.
A quick response was made to this incident with two team vehicles soon mobile to the incident, and a further two team vehicles mobilising slightly later on.
The first two arriving team vehicles rendevouzed at the car park at Harwood Golf Club, and with a full compliment of team members on board they journeyed up to the location of the incident, a drive of approximately 1.5km.
With thanks to the owner of the local stables, the team was permitted to drive one of its vehicles through the stable area and onto a field immediately adjacent to the casualty.
The male’s injured arm and leg had been splinted by the NWAS crew prior to our arrival and pain releif had been administered. Utilising one of the team’s SAR Alpine Lite Mountain Rescue stretchers, along with a “casualty bag” to keep him warm, nine team members carried the injured male some 230m along the golf course and then over a fence to the waiting NWAS Emergency Ambulance, which then promptly departed for Royal Bolton Hospital.
In total 23 team members and four team vehicles attended this early morning incident (the other team members & vehicles were on hand to assist with the carry if it had been a more protracted or difficult stretcher evacuation). Two additional team members were stood down whilst responding.
Our thanks are expressed to the staff at the stables at “The Height” for allowing us to park at, and drive onto their land in order to make the job easier for us, as well as to Harwood Golf Club for putting up with the arrival of quite a few team vehicles onto their car park!
Thanks are also expressed to the NWAS Control staff and Ambulance crew as this incident reflected the excellent close working relationship we have with the ambulance service.
Finally, we wish the injured male a speedy recovery and return to his golfing soon!
At 17.04hrs this warm sunny evening, our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE was contacted directly by NWAS Manchester Emergency Control Centre, requesting the team to attend an incident with the report of an injured climber who had fallen, with another person stuck on the same rock face, all in the vicinity of Leyland Mill Brow, Haigh Plantations, Wigan. (A location we were later to find out is locally called ‘Devils Canyon.’)
Whilst establishing more details and an emergency vehicles RVP our Team Leader was also informed an Emergency Ambulance was on scene, with the NWAA Helimed en route alongside the NWAS Manchester HART Team.
A fully detailed team pager call out message was sent at 17.17hrs, with our first team vehicle going mobile from our Ladybridge Hall Base / HQ at 17.20hrs.
Nick Berry was our first team member on scene at circa 17.30hrs establishing that the fallen male climber, aged 27, had already been evacuated by NWAS, so he assisted two NWAS HART members who had lowered a harness and rope to the ‘cragfast’ 20 year old companion of the fallen man, and with the use of mechanical aids, the male was raised safely to the top of the rock face.
By this time at circa 17.35hrs our 2nd responding team member Alistair Greenough, had also arrived on scene with two Team Land Rover Mountain Rescue Ambulances also mobile at this time, one of which including our Team Leader were minutes away from the RVP, when news came via Alistair to stand down the team at 17.38hrs, as the incident had now been safely concluded, with a ‘Stand Down’ pager message being sent at 17.41hrs.
At this stage, GMFRS assets who had also been called by NWAS were on scene but stood down, as had been GMP and Helimed which had departed earlier at 17.29hrs.
The following resources were known to have been involved in this incident, please note this listing may be incomplete;
Bolton Mountain Rescue Team; Three Team Land Rover Mountain Rescue Ambulance Vehicles responded, two team members arrived on scene in time to play a part in the later stages of the rescue of the ‘cragfast’ person, with a further twenty two team members stood down responding.
