Throughout today for the second day running, Bolton MRT team member and SARDA (Wales) Trailing Dog handler Steve Nelson and his Search Dog Boris were deployed again in the continuing search for five year old April Jones missing from Machynlleth, Wales.
Steve joined todays very large Mountain Rescue and SARDA (Wales) and SARDA (England) presence on the search, alongside Police Officers, RAF MRT, RNLI, Coastguard personnel and members of the local community.
Late this evening Steve returned to his Bury home after spending two days deployed on this huge search operation.
Early this morning Bolton MRT team member and SARDA (Wales) Trailing Dog handler Steve Nelson and his Search Dog Boris were deployed to the continuing search for five year old April Jones missing from Machynlleth, Wales.
Steve joined a growing Mountain Rescue and SARDA presence on the search, including Police Officers, RNLI and Coastguard personnel.
Footnote; As of Thursday morning 4th October, we understand Steve was further deployed along with other SARDA (Wales) SARDA (England) and Mountain Rescue assets in the continuing search for young April.
Late yesterday evening, Saturday 29th September, the team was contacted by Peter Goble, Team Leader of Rossendale & Pendle MRT, regards the possibility of the team being called to assist RPMRT in an ongoing search operation for a missing person in the Norden area of Rochdale.
At the same time, the services of our SARDA Trailing Dog was also requested, in both cases to assist with a continuation of the search planned for this morning (Sunday 30th September)
This morning, with adequate resources available to Rossendale & Pendle MRT the need for Bolton MRT team members to assist was not required.
However, our SARDA Trailing Dog Boris and his handler Steve Nelson was still required to attend joined by our Training Officer Elaine Gilliland who acted as Steve’s navigator.
Steve and Elaine, along with Boris arrived at the search RVP at circa 08:30 in the vicinity of the Naden and Greenbooth valley, immediately north of Norden, Rochdale.
They were tasked with various searches in the area which Steve, Boris and Elaine completed by early afternoon, returning home by 14:15. The search continued after Steve and Elaine had left and at this stage involved members of Rossendle & Pendle MRT, Greater Manchester Police resources, and SARDA (air scenting) dogs from Oldham MRT (two dogs & two handlers), Calder Valley SRT (one dog & handler) and Glossop MRT (one dog & handler).

At 16.03hrs this afternoon, our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE was contacted directly by NWAS (Manchester) Emergency Control Centre, for the teams assistance at an off road motorcycle incident.
Initially the North West Air Ambulance had been considered but was on other operational taskings.
At 16.11hrs a full team call out page was made, to the RVP at the end of Warth Fold Road, Warth Fold, Bury, immediately next to the Metrolink Level Crossing by the River Irwell.
Our first team member Sam McKay arrived at the RVP at 16.26hrs and made initial contact with one of the friends of the injured youth and the NWAS (Manchester) responding crew.
At 16.42hrs our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE then arrived on scene, with Sam now en route to the actual casualty site, on meadow land alongside the River Irwell at Warth Fold, Bury.
Our first responding Land Rover arrived at 16.44hrs and with heavy rain now starting to fall, equipment was immediately despatched to the casualty site.
On scene, the NWAS crew were treating a twenty one year old male for serious shoulder and arm injuries sustained in a fall whilst off road motor biking, including the provision of pain killing gas.
Provided by the team and administered in co-operation with the NWAS crew, a powerful pain killing drug was then given to the casualty, as the weather turned from heavy downpours to torrential rain.
Just after 17.00hrs the evacuation of the injured male started, using our specialist mountain rescue stretcher, on a short but very awkward stretcher carry, involving having to traverse part of the river bank of the River Irwell under a very low bridge (With only four feet of headroom) and then on a very narrow pedestrian bridge over the River Irwell, and along narrow very densely vegetated footpaths, all in now torrential rainfall.
By 17.10hrs the casualty was in the warmth and (More importantly) dry of the NWAS Ambulance, which then departed for North Manchester Hospital.
Our last members left the RVP by 17.32hrs, with one of our two responding team vehicles travelling to North Manchester Hospital to retrieve team equipment items used in the evacuation.
Once back at our Ladybridge Hall Base / HQ we then started the long task of drying out a large amount of totally wet through equipment used on this rescue.

NWAS (Manchester) Emergency Ambulance, Ramsbottom Ambulance Station, two crew members.
Bolton MRT, two Land Rover Mountain Rescue Ambulance vehicles (BM1 and BM3) eighteen team members on scene, and a further three stood down responding.
Friends of the injured male, who gave help with directing us to the actual incident site.
This week started with a Call Out for our Mountain Rescue Trailing Dog team and ended today with another call Out for the same.
At circa 15.00hrs this afternoon, Bolton MRT Team member and SARDA (Wales) Search Dog handler Steve Nelson, received an initial call from SARDA (Wales) to possibly assist NEWSAR, who were in turn working with Cheshire Search and Rescue Team, on a search operation to locate a missing 80 year old male in the Frodsham area of Cheshire.
At circa 15.30hrs Steve with his Trailing Dog Boris were put on formal standby, and then called out, with Steve and Boris deploying to the Fordsham area at 16.45hrs.
Upon arrival Steve received his briefing, and was starting to deploy when news was received that the missing male had been located by a Police Search Party.
Steve and Boris returned home at 19.30hrs.

Whilst traveling home from supporting Warrington’s got talent we received a call from Cheshire Police requesting assistance to search for a missing male in Frodsham. Those attending the event immediately deployed to assist and were joined by other members just before 23:00hrs.
Just three days after receiving life jackets that were donated by members of Warrington Youth Club (who had given up a large part of their summer fundraising to buy them) they were used to search river banks and edges of still water to search for the missing male.
The team was stood down and the last members left Frodsham Police Station at 05:30hrs. The search resumed in the morning of Sunday 16th September, and Police teams, Cheshire Search and Rescue teams and teams with a mixture of both worked alongside each other throughout the day.
In the afternoon our very good friends and colleagues at SARDA Wales (Bolton MRT Steve Nelson and Search Dog / Trailing Dog Boris) and NEWSAR (North East Wales Search and Rescue Team) joined us with a view to searching through the night and our very good friends and colleagues from Staffordshire SART were preparing to join us in the morning to search with us throughout the next day.
Cheshire Police located the male just after 18:00hrs and he was treated by two of our medics (who were trained for free by the faculty of ATACC) until the ambulance service arrived on scene shortly thereafter.
The search involved Cheshire SART, Warrington Youth Club’s young people’s fundraising, the residents of Frodsham, Cheshire Police, North West Ambulance Service, a mountain rescue team (NEWSAR) our dog team, a SARDA Wales Trailing Dog Team (Bolton MRT handler Steve Nelson and Dog Boris) a neighbouring lowland search and rescue team (Staffordshire SART) and the faculty of ATACC.
We would like to thank everyone involved for their assistance that led to a great result.
