Meet the Team – Nathan

How long have you been in the team?

I’ve been with the team for just over three years: one year as a trainee and two years as an operational team member.

Why did you join the team?

Two reasons. One is that I love being outdoors, whether that’s in the Lakes, Wales, or Scotland, the Alps, in the sea, making a fool of myself on a surfboard, or out on our fantastic local moors. The second reason is that I thought it’d be a great thing to help those in need, especially given that I’ve had a few ‘dicey’ moments in the past where I, too, may have benefited from some willing volunteers, had things not worked out well.

Do you hold any specific position in the team?

On the operational side, I’m a Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Technician on our Water Team. Behind the scenes, I’m the team’s Equipment Officer. I also help with our social media.

What do you think are the main qualities/skills needed to join the team?

In my eyes, an operational team member should have good ‘hill-fitness’, an ability to navigate, and some local knowledge. They should have a positive outlook, be approachable, and have some kind of sense of humour. But – perhaps above all – they should be willing to be taught, be adaptable, and be willing to listen. A lot of technical skills are needed to be a team member, but the team will train you in all these required skills.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I like helping others. I enjoy working with like-minded people outdoors. I love the feeling of a job well done, and the comradeship that a difficult training event or callout brings.
