At 18:10 this evening the team were called by North West Ambulance Service for assistance to a female horse rider at Moses Gate Park.
The woman had fallen off her horse sustaining a hip injury.
19 Team members responded to the casualty who met with the responding NWAS ambulance crews. The casualty was loaded into one of our Land Rover Ambulances and driven to the roadhead.
The team wishes the horse rider a speedy recovery.
Today the team was contacted by the North West Ambulance Services (NWAS) to assist with the transport of a 17 year old female who had fallen from her horse in the Hindsford area of Tyldesley.
The ambulance was able to access the casualty direct but she was complaining of severe back pain and the road was unsurfaced and transporting her in the NWAS ambulance down that road would have caused severe distress. Therefore following discussion with the paramedic on scene the decision was made to transfer the lady onto our mountain rescue stretcher which had been prepared with our vacuum mattress to immobilise her back and casualty bag to help keep her warm and remove the crews scoop stretcher.
This allowed the team members to do a short carry of about 200m which although only took a few minutes helped prevent quite a bit of suffering for the casualty which is ultimately why the team is here.
Another great example of joint working with NWAS.
The team wishes the young lady a full and speedy recovery.
At 18:45 the team was contacted by North West Ambulance Service control room to assist with a female who had fallen from her horse and sustained a back injury in the Dunham Massey area.
First team members on scene liaised with the paramedic and our vacuum mattress was used to immobilise the lady who was then transferred to our mountain rescue stretcher for the 500m carry to the ambulance. From there she was taken to Whythenshawe hospital for further assessment.
In total 26 team members were involved in this incident.
Prestolee seems to be vying with Rivington as a regular location for the team to respond to incidents!
Early this afternoon, NWAS (Manchester) responded to an incident involving a female horse rider who had fallen from her mount sustaining a head injury.
Upon the arrival of the NWAS Rapid Response Vehicle, it was thought that due to the poor surface nature of the track leading to Oak Hill Farm, Prestolee, the assistance of the team maybe required with one of our Land Rover Ambulances.
We were paged at 15.22hrs, with our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE liaising with NWAS EOC Parkway to further determine the exact location and incident details.
Following a full team pager call out at 15.50hrs our first responding team member, Phil Crook, arrived on scene at Oak Hill Farm, quickly followed by our Team Leader.
Phil established the team was no longer required, as an NWAS Emergency Ambulance had managed to access the farm, and a pager stand down was made at 15.52hrs, with all responding vehicles and members stood down, some just as they were arriving at the farm.
The following resources were involved in this incident;
NWAS (Greater Manchester Area); EOC Parkway, one Emergency Ambulance, with two crew, and one Rapid Response Vehicle with one crew member.
Bolton Mountain Rescue Team; Three Land Rover Defender Mountain Rescue Ambulances, call signs Bolton Mobiles 1,2 and 3. Two team members stood down on scene and thirteen team members stood down responding.
At 08:55 this morning the team was contacted by the North West Ambulance Service (Broughton EOC) via SARCALL. NWAS were requesting our assistance at an incident on the moors above Darwen.
A 51 year old female had reportedly been thrown from her horse after it had been spooked whilst out riding on the tracks on Darwen Moor.
The call was answered by Deputy Team Leader Chris Greenhalgh whilst team members assembled at the vehicle garage locations and donned waterproofs for what would prove to be quite a damp callout.
The first team vehicles were en-route to Darwen from Bolton by 09:10; arriving at the designated RVP at Sunnyhurst Inn, on the fringes of Darwen Moor, by 09:40, whereupon they made contact via the Airwave radio system with the NWAS crew who had already begun to make their way on the moor accompanied by team member Dave Cook.
The North West Air Ambulance had also been called to this incident but due to the prevailing weather conditions of low cloud was unable to land close to the scene.
The female casualty involved had reportedly suffered serious injuries as a result of this accident, so an initial party of five team members was deployed in our BM2 Land Rover ambulance onto the moor. After careful driving for approximately 1km, the vehicle arrived at the scene of the accident, some 40m below Darwen Tower, on the slopes above Sunnyhurst Hey Reservoir.
In heavy rain and wind, specialist rescue equipment was used to help treat her injuries, and keep her as warm and dry as possible. The casualty was then placed on board a SAR Alpine Lite Mountain Rescue stretcher. With the arrival of additional team members at the scene, the injured female was carried back to the waiting NWAS Emergency Ambulance at the Sunnyhurst Inn RVP.
Whilst the casualty was transferred to the NWAS ambulance for onward transport to Royal Preston Hospital, two team members (now both quite damp) returned back onto the moor to retrieve the vehicle that had been left at the accident scene earlier.
All team members were back at the road by 11:20 and vehicles returned to their base locations, where equipment used on the callout was put out to dry. Meanwhile, team member Neil Aspinall made his way to Royal Preston Hospital to recover several items of equipment which had been taken to hospital with the casualty.
All said and done, the incident was finally concluded by 14:00.
The following resources were involved in this incident:
North West Ambulance Service
Broughton EOC Air Desk dispatcher
Emergency Ambulance and two crew
Lancashire Constabulary
Two divisional officers (initially called as the horse had reportedly bolted off the moor, into domestic gardens)
North West Air Ambulance – Aircraft was unable to attend due to weather conditions
In June 2020 we sent over ten fire engines, to a moorland fire upon Darwen Moor as well as a lot of resources from @unitedutilities@BoltonMRT and other agencies attending this major incident incident. @DCCWoods has confirmed that two Lancashire residents have now been charged. twitter.com/DCCWoods/statu…
